Four current and former police officers from Louisville, Kentucky, were arrested Thursday and face federal charges brought by the Justice Department over the 2020 shooting of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman who was killed after officers raided her home as she slept. Taylor’s death in March 2020 was one of the high-profile police shootings that fueled the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests that year. In September, a Kentucky grand jury decided to not indict officers for her death, which spurred more protests in Louisville. Before Thursday, only one officer ever faced charges over Taylor’s shooting: Hankison, who was accused of endangering her neighbors but acquitted in March 2022. Hankison was fired from the force in June 2020.
